The “Rustlers Valley 2017” project led to the construction and installation of 60 streetlights for public use for the off-grid communities of Franshoek and Naledi, located in the Free State, South Africa.

Mainly dedicated to agriculture and farming, the communities are distinguished by the particular care to the impact on the environment generated by their activities: for this reason, the representatives of the two villages have accepted the proposal of construction and installation of self-sufficient lighting powered by solar energy, enjoying the benefits of it without asking for anything in return from the surrounding environment.

The whole working process saw the active participation of both communities, leading to the establishment of a local team, responsible for the maintenance and repair of the streetlights.
The intervention was made possible thanks to the economic and logistic support from Enel S.P.A’s Sustainability branch, together with the convinced collaboration and support of the Enel Green Power-SA office, based in Johannesburg.

Part of the materials necessary for the construction of the public lighting systems were transported from Johannesburg with the intention of providing first choice components to extend the life cycle of the lamps.
Later, a team of Liter Of Light technicians and community representatives conducted research on the surrounding area, ensuring the supply chain of spare parts within 20 km from the communities.
To date, all the streetlights are operational.
